Lucky Me

Recently, around Chinese New Year, my grandmother told me about how, growing up, her family had a tradition where they made dumplings right before the New Year because the little dumplings resemble money pouches, so they are said to bring good fortune in the coming year. My work reimagines dumplings filled with jewelry and gems instead of traditional fillings. Fortune cookies, on the other hand, are strongly linked with Chinese culture but interestingly, do not originate from China. My work reflects on cultural symbols of prosperity, as I celebrate my Eastern heritage in the West.
